It's coming home... Football club move receives local backing (mostly)

Gorleston FC wants to build a new £4m stadium and community hub at the town's Recreation Ground.

The plans have attracted overwhelming public support, with more than 300 people noting the club's historical connections to the Rec, the benefit to young people and the chance to regenerate a space many describe as neglected.

Gorleston FC began life at the Recreation Ground in 1889 and played there for 93 years.

The club currently shares the Wellesley ground with Great Yarmouth FC - and many supporters say attendances have suffered as a result.

One supporter, from Old Farm Road, said: "Ironically, on the pitch the club is now at its most successful, but off it the attendances have never been so poor.

"I have no doubt that they will treble in numbers easily if the club returns to Gorleston - else I fear it will fade away forever."
