'Steakgate' Norfolk council leader on Conservative shortlist to be mayor

Kay Mason Billig is one of three Tories vying for selection to stand in next May's elections for the inaugural mayor of Norfolk and Suffolk.

The County Hall leader joins Suffolk police and crime commissioner Tim Passmore and former Suffolk County Council leader Colin Noble in the final three, with a selection decision imminent.

Mrs Mason Billig's bid to be picked comes shortly after she was criticised, including by members of her own party, for a Facebook post.

The council received 11 complaints about the private post to her friends, which showed a picture of a steak dinner she was about to tuck into, with the caption "wonder what all the poor people are doing?"

She was accused of mocking those less well off than her, but said the post was a private joke which........
