UK's first rice crop harvested from trial paddy field in the Fens

Nine varieties including risotto, basmati and sushi rice were grown in rewetted peat soils near Ely, as part of a project bringing farmers together with scientists from the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH).

The trials aim to see which food and bioenergy crops can thrive in waterlogged UK conditions - maintaining farm incomes while reducing carbon emissions from degraded peatlands.

The fertile Cambridgeshire Fens is a vital area for agriculture, producing crops worth around £1.2bn per year including a third of the nation's fresh vegetables.

But it is also a hotspot for greenhouse gas........
