Trump's trade tariffs pose a 'concerning' challenge for UK food firms, says NFU
US president Donald Trump has announced new import taxes on all goods entering the United States, saying the "reciprocal" new measures are needed to rectify trade imbalances.
But while the UK has been hit by a lower baseline tariff compared to the EU (20pc), the National Farmers' Union (NFU) said it remained a "concerning situation" for food producers and exporters.
The US is the largest market for British agri-food products outside of the EU, with exports of food, drinks and animals valued at nearly £2.6bn in 2024.
NFU president Tom Bradshaw described the unfolding trade war as a "developing and concerning situation" which provided "a challenge for the UK and for agriculture".
