Norfolk mayor quits after just 29 DAYS with waspish swipe at 'certain councillors'

Tony Bishopp stepped down from the role at Hunstanton Town Council after just 29 days in the post.

At a meeting on Wednesday, which he did not attend, deputy mayor Mark Williamson read a short statement from him, which said: "There are lots of reasons why I have made this decision, it would be wrong of me to explain here, God forbid I upset someone."

However, a second statement was later released in which he was more forthright, citing "personality clashes" and saying that with a lot of work for the council to tackle, "certain councillors weren't giving it the time it deserves".

One insider described the atmosphere on the council as "toxic" prior to the meeting, which heard a number of long-standing councillors had also resigned over recent months.

The source said there were big issues which needed to be addressed - including Norfolk's ongoing local government reorganisation, along with proposals for a tidal barrage across the Wash.

At the meeting, Mr Williamson addressed the turmoil. He said: "This council cannot keep going the way it has.
