Deadline nears for work to start on controversial development in village

Detailed plans for 122 homes on land of Cheney Hill, at Heacham, were agreed last July despite widespread opposition.

Locals feared the new estate, which will be built in two phases, would create "a village within a village", while the parish council said there were already 1,000 vehicles a day passing the site and construction traffic would bring congestion.

But the plans were agreed by West Norfolk Council with a condition that work was started within a year, which lapses on July 28.

Other conditions were also attached, including details of roads and footpaths being agreed in writing by the borough before work could start.

Developer WH Kerkham has now requested these be amended so it can create an access to the site before the other conditions have been agreed, which it says will allow work to begin in "a timely fashion".
