The victim received a gaping head wound when he was struck with a hatchet-style axe in an alleyway in the Pilling Park area of Norwich on Wednesday.

He then walked almost two miles into the city centre, in heavily bloodstained clothing.

Members of the public called the emergency services when they saw him stagger through the Cathedral Close, but he kept walking and police and paramedics did not catch up with him until he reached Red Lion Street, near the former Debenhams store.

Officers then established the original attack had taken place elsewhere and were sent to the Pilling Park area to begin inquiries.........
