Thousands of homes in North Norfolk hit by new double council tax charge
The figures are according to data obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.
Since April 1, anyone owning a second home in the district has been required to pay a 100pc premium on top of their overall council tax bill.
It effectively doubles the amount they pay annually for properties not used as a main residence.
Data shows that 4,631 homes in the North Norfolk District Council area are now subject to the charge, with the highest concentrations in coastal hotspots.
Sheringham tops the list with 538 second homes paying the premium, followed by Cromer (535), Wells-next-the-Sea (413), Holt (239), and Blakeney (195).
The new powers, granted under the Levelling-up and Regeneration Act 2023, aim to address the growing pressures on housing in areas where locals say second home ownership has contributed to rising house prices and hollowed-out communities.
