EDP Business Awards 2025: Environmental & Sustainability finalists revealed
British Sugar is the sole processor of the UK’s sugar beet crop. The company processes around eight million tonnes of sugar beet grown across the fields of East Anglia and neighbouring regions every year.
Two of its four factories are based in Norfolk. Cantley is the UK’s oldest sugar beet factory, built in 1912, while the Wissington factory is the UK’s largest, celebrating its centenary this year.
British Sugar’s circular economy model ensures there is almost zero waste from its process. Every root of beet is used to produce not only sugar but also a range of value-added co-products to industries such as agriculture, pharmaceutical, transport and energy.

The judges said: “British Sugar clearly takes its emission reduction seriously, proven by its significant investment into new, low-emission agricultural equipment and its innovative work with The John Innes Centre and Tropic Biosciences to prevent yellows disease in sugar beet.”
