Rebellion over Rachel Reeves' rates raid as one firm says its bill will rise to £1m
Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, has been accused of delivering a budget of “smoke and mirrors” after it was emerged pubs, hotels, shops and restaurants now face significantly higher business rates next year.

In the House of Commons last Wednesday, Ms Reeves claimed she was introducing the "lowest tax rates since 1991" by permanently lowering rates for over 750,000 retail, hospitality and leisure properties.
But the combination of the end of the 40pc discount on business rates in April, and a much higher evaluation of the value of their buildings used to calculate rates, will see them pay tens of thousands more each year.
These 'hidden clauses' were first revealed by the Eastern Daily Press last week.
