Wendy Rose and Joe Kelly stepped away from the York in Leicester Street, in the city's Golden Triangle, in February, citing rising costs and pressure on the hospitality industry.

The Stonegate-owned pub temporarily closed before reopening under the management of Rose Hanison, the landlady of the Black Horse and the Earlham in Earlham Road, this month.

Now, a company owned by the couple, Bacchus Pubs Ltd, which previously operated the pub, is entering liquidation.

The pair took over the management of the York in spring 2023, following a refurb.

Under their leadership, the venue was included in the Good Food Guide and won Diners' Choice Awards two years in a row.

"The current financial climate and extra stress on the hospitality industry have finally taken their toll, and we have decided to prioritise our health and family," they said, speaking back in February.

"We have honestly had the best time over the last few years and have been overwhelmed by your support and love.

"We are so proud of the community we have created and although we can no longer continue, we have no regrets."

The York reopened under new management on April 9.

The pub dates back to 1878, with some of this heritage being preserved in the Pétanque pitch in the pub garden - a nod to the York bowling club, which was based at the site in the early 1920s.

A virtual meeting of creditors of Bacchus Pubs Ltd will take place on May 6.
