What’s Up With Melania’s Surprise Epstein Denial: 3 Theories
Melania Trump made a brief statement on Thursday afternoon to answer the biggest question on everyone’s mind right now. No, not “Will the cease-fire hold?” Or “Why is Trump doing this?” Or even “Is he going to kill us all?” Apparently, the First Lady thinks everyone’s been wondering, “Hey, what’s up with those persistent rumors about Melania’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein?”
The answer, according to Melania, is that they’re all a bunch of lies.
“I’ve never been been friends with Epstein,” she said. “I never had a relationship with Epstein or his accomplice, Maxwell. My email reply to Maxwell cannot been [categorized] as anything more than casual correspondence. My polite reply to her email doesn’t amount to anything more than a [trivial] note. I am not Epstein’s victim. Epstein did not introduce me to Donald Trump.”
The First Lady claimed she and Donald were merely in “overlapping social circles” with Epstein (downplaying her husband’s well-documented friendship with the deceased sex offender). She said that when she first met Epstein at a party in 2000, which she attended with her future husband, “I had never met Epstein and had no knowledge of his criminal undertakings.”
Melania first pushed back against rumors about her ties to Epstein via subtweet in July 2025. As she mentioned in her statement, she has taken legal action against several people and outlets that publicly suggested Epstein was more than a casual acquaintance she happened to be photographed with at parties. The latest batch of Epstein files included a friendly 2002 email urging Maxwell to “Give me a call when you are back in NY” that’s signed, “Love, Melania.” But that message was released two months ago.
So why did Melania decide, as she declared at the start of her statement, that “the lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today?” No one really knows. But here are a few popular theories.
. A big story is about to break.
No one wants people spreading false rumors about them, particularly if they involve a notorious pedophile. So it makes sense that Melania Trump wants to shut these stories down. But what’s the urgency here? Melania’s email to Maxwell barely got any attention, since there were much bigger revelations in the latest batch of Epstein files. It hadn’t even been confirmed that the email was from the “Melania” we all know today, since the sender’s full name was redacted.
The most logical explanation: The First Lady is trying to get ahead of forthcoming story about her ties to Epstein. But there are no specific rumors about such a story circulating on social media; it’s all just conjecture based on Melania’s statement.

. It’s a distraction.
Usually, people claim that Donald Trump’s daily antics are just an attempt to distract from the Epstein scandal. But has the Iran-war news gotten so bad for the president that the White House would actually prefer we go back to talking about Trump-Epstein conspiracy theories? Maybe!
. She’s just keeping it weird.
The Melania movie doesn’t leave viewers with the impression that the First Lady is very in touch with the people (or normal human emotions and behaviors). Maybe she just didn’t realize there was anything else big going on in the news right now? Or that bringing up her relationship with Epstein out of the blue would only raise more questions? Perhaps Melania was just fulfilling her own prime directive: Always leave people asking “What is she thinking?”
