Republicans are facing a midterm election that is very likely to end their trifecta control of the federal government. So they urgently need some help from the man who determines everything for them. According to virtually every expert, Donald Trump needs to develop and incessantly promote an agenda that shows voters he’s doing something to improve a stormy economy and reduce the cost of living. It’s one of two issues thought to have returned him to power in 2024, and the other one, immigration, has become deeply problematic.

But instead of focusing monomaniacally on affordability, as his advisers want him to do, Trump has launched a war of choice against Iran that is as unpopular as he is. This war, furthermore, is making life visibly less affordable thanks to spiking gasoline prices. Since he cannot tell anyone exactly when this war will end, what is Trump instructing his troops to do to avoid a midterm catastrophe? As usual, he gave his marching orders on Truth Social, posting this on Sunday:
