The number of fines for families taking holidays during term time has skyrocketed over the past few years, with thousands of penalties issued in Newcastle - but some Chronicle Live readers in our comments section say it still isn't enough to put them off despite warnings from the council.

2,365 of these fines were issued in 2024 - a massive leap from the 734 dished out during the previous year. You can be issued with an £80 fine for taking your child out of school without authorisation, and city education chiefs have taken a hard line on what should be allowed.
