Yasir Al-Rumayyan sees Newcastle United 70,000 stadium dream as Arsenal offer glimpse into future
A Sunday morning stroll around the Emirates Stadium may offer a few clues about what happens next at Newcastle United in terms of a new stadium decision.
It's almost 20 years since the doors at the Emirates first swung open and Arsenal swapped the old Highbury and all of its traditional charm and grandeur for the plush 60,000 seater ground that Gunners fans now call home. It cost Arsenal £390m back in 2004, when work commenced, and restrictions in capacity, despite attempts in the 1990s to improve Highbury, resulted in a bold decision to move to Ashburton Grove.
Like Newcastle in 2025, there is a big dilemma on moving ground with St James' Park the Magpies' spiritual forever home in the eyes of many fans. Some are completely against a move and would leave the Gallowgate End behind through gritted teeth
Others are open to a switch to a 70,000 seater stadium with suggestions that Leazes Park would be the most likely new venue. That would soften the blow for many who don't want to move too far away from the current ground.
It was images of the potential new 70,000 capacity home and a revamped 60,000 St James' option that were believed to be shown to Toon chairman and PIF supremo Yasir Al-Rumayyan on a visit to Maften Hall earlier this year.
