One thing where leftists won't get an argument out of me is how only the wealthy can afford hired security. It's a tragic truth that the working class, most at risk from crime, can't afford bodyguards or neighborhood security patrols.
This tragic truth was brought home during my tenure as vice president of a neighborhood association in a high crime, low income area. Despite an influx of monied newcomers, they hadn't displaced danger.
Our neighbors, literally across the avenue, were a high crime, high income enclave.
These well-heeled former neighbors wanted to start a security district where off-duty police officers or armed guards from a licensed security company would ride routes on the lookout for trouble and respond to subscriber concerns.
The wealthy corporate liberals in the other neighborhood association were honest enough with themselves to concede that crime was largely launched from my old neighborhood and similar ones nearby.
Conversely, many of my former constituents were more concerned with possible racial profiling than profiling done to residents by area criminals. The fact that the security district hiring pool is largely Black police officers or security professionals was lost on them.
They also missed the part where I would be involved in oversight for security patrols as a Black male neighborhood association VP.
Affordability was the other big issue. Folks where I lived couldn't afford a monthly security district fee. In a rare act of solidarity, to use a progressive phrase, residents from the other association offered free membership to nearby working class neighbors.
I was shocked and pleasantly surprised by the offer. It earned my immediate support. And sinking suspicion that misguided residents would decline it.
Proposed security district patrols would monitor and respond equally to paying and non-paying members.
This was a sweetheart deal but leftist ideology soured it. Despite ongoing crime issues, folks in my former neighborhood association let politics get in the way of safety, even when it was offered for free!
That impasse galls me to this day. Local Green Party/Democratic Socialists of America thinking endangers the very working class they champion.
Conflating protection with prejudice ultimately leaves poor people unsecured who sorely need protection.
They rejected free security dedicated to them in favor of loyalty to beliefs typed up by safe, suburban socialists.
Safety is a privilege under such conditioning—and it shouldn't be.
High crime, low income neighborhoods can't afford to hire security patrols.
They also can't afford the mindset opposing having security patrols.
Keep in mind, criminals already 'patrol' these areas.
