Mill Road Bridge bus gate fines 'the worst decision ever made'

Cambridgeshire Live readers have been debating the introduction of a bus gate on Mill Road bridge. The bridge has seen a significant number of fines issued to drivers who have violated the bus gate restrictions, risking a £70 penalty.

A Freedom of Information request submitted by Cambridgeshire Live unveiled that more than 4,600 penalty charge notices (PCNs) were handed out in just under two months.

Last year, Cambridgeshire County Council agreed to issue a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to install a bus gate on the bridge. This marked the second time the authority had agreed to issue a TRO after the first was overturned following a legal challenge.

The restrictions established under the TRO close the bridge to all motor vehicles. They allow for certain exemptions including local buses, taxis, emergency services, blue badge holders registered vehicles, vehicles in a disabled tax class, and vehicles on the council's permitted vehicles list.
