Breakenridge: No accountability from Alberta's Liberal MPs

07.01.2025

After a disastrous 2024 for the Liberal Party of Canada, 2025 begins with reality finally setting in for its embattled and soon-to-be former leader.

In the face of ugly poll numbers and growing internal pressure to resign, Justin Trudeau announced yesterday that he intends to do just that. It’s not clear when that will be, however, as Trudeau plans to stay on until the party selects a new leader. Parliament will be prorogued until March, in the meantime.

It’s hard to see how any of this ends the Liberals’ woes or reverses their fortunes in any significant way. In their final poll of 2024, the Angus Reid Institute pegs Liberal support at just 16 per cent nationally. If that’s the current picture across the country, then imagine how bleak things must look from the perspective of Liberals here in Alberta.
