Bell: Bike lane crackdown looms, Smith's UCP demands Calgary numbers

Premier Danielle Smith’s government wants Calgary city hall’s bike lane numbers — now.

Not next year. Not next month. Now. They’ve been asking, they haven’t getting.

Devin Dreeshen, Smith’s transportation boss, is looking at a new provincial law cracking down on bike lanes being planned that would take away lanes of traffic or parking.

The law could also allow for the removal of existing bike lanes if they are affecting traffic flow or not being used enough.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” says Dreeshen, starting to lose his patience with Calgary city hall paper-shufflers, as many of us already have.
