Brookman: Low voter turnout means mayor, council represent very few of population

Exactly 31 days from today, Calgarians will choose their mayor and council for the next four years.

“If you do not vote, then you cannot comment” is a good rule when you make the decision to exercise your democratic right. My mother, who lived her teen years in the Netherlands under the Nazis, drilled it into our heads that voting was not just a right, it was a responsibility.

Yet, in spite of this privilege, less than 50 per cent of eligible Calgary voters voted in 2021 and the mayor was chosen by 45 per cent of them. In other words, the mayor of Calgary was elected by about 22 per cent of the people who could have voted.
