Varcoe: Alberta suffers collateral damage from tariff 'blast radius,' with delay of Dow's $9B megaproject

Alberta’s energy sector has largely escaped the tariff hit from U.S. President Donald Trump, but the province isn’t immune to broader trade chaos and volatility pounding the global economy — and it’s now arrived on the doorstep of Alberta’s biggest investment project.

Michigan-based giant Dow Inc. announced Thursday it is delaying construction of the company’s $9-billion net-zero petrochemical project, which is being built in Fort Saskatchewan.

The move will see Dow scale back capital spending by US$1 billion to $2.5 billion this year, although the company stressed it remains committed to its “Path2Zero project” northeast of Edmonton.
