Opinion: Albertans becoming more wise to water risks from mining
Coal Association of Canada president Robin Campbell said, “Polling consistently shows a majority support responsible resource development.” The source linked is an article reporting on a single poll commissioned by Northback, which aims to develop the Grassy Mountain coal mine in the Crowsnest Pass.
A poll paid for by local landowners indicates as little as 25 per cent support for coal mining in the Eastern Slopes. Another independent poll from 2021 said 69 per cent of Albertans oppose development in formerly protected areas.
And polling changes with education. If you polled Calgarians about the need to increase taxes to upgrade water infrastructure three years ago, the results would likely have had a strong majority opposed. Today, I am guessing those polls would be significantly different.
