The trial over the death of Argentine football superstar Diego Maradona has been postponed once more. 

Initially set to start on March 17, the new proceedings’ commencement date has been set for April 14. The hearings will also go through with a reduced number of witnesses, dropping from the original over 200 to around 100. 

One of the reasons for this was the number of holidays and recess days that would’ve cut the hearings short if the trial began in March. 

“The rescheduling aims to preserve the continuity of the debate, and we agree with that,” Maradona’s daughters’ lawyer Fernando Burlando told news outlet TN. 

Both measures were approved by a majority vote from judges Alberto Ortolani and Alberto Gaig, while judge Pablo Rolón was the only one who opposed it.

It’s not the first time the trial has been set back. The original hearings were scheduled for June 2025, but began in March 2025.

The initial trial was suspended after judge Julieta Mackintach had to recuse herself for allowing the illegal entry of video cameras to secretly film a documentary about the case. She was later removed from her position by an impeachment jury.

Eight people stand accused of failing to administer proper medical care for Maradona, who died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60. 

The list includes Maradona’s main medical advisor, Leopoldo Luque, as well as the star’s psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, and psychologist, Carlos Díaz, medical care coordinators Nancy Forlini and Mariano Perroni, designated doctor Pedro Di Spagna, and nurses Madrid and Ricardo Almirón.
