Trump slams ‘fake news’ over Putin meeting delays claim
US President Donald Trump has fiercely criticized media reports alleging that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, faced extended delays before meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Trump dismissed these claims as “fake news,” insisting that Witkoff encountered no wait before his crucial discussions with the Russian leader.
In a post on Truth Social on March 15, Trump refuted claims made by Sky News and other outlets that Witkoff had been kept waiting for at least eight hours before being summoned into the Kremlin. “The Fake News, as usual, is at it again!” Trump wrote, adding that “no wait whatsoever” occurred for Witkoff’s meeting with Putin.
Trump’s forceful response came after Sky News reported on March 14 that the US envoy had been “left twiddling his thumbs” before gaining an audience with Putin. The story was subsequently echoed by multiple media organizations, fueling speculation about possible tensions between Washington and Moscow.
Witkoff, a prominent real estate mogul and longtime Trump associate, has taken on a growing diplomatic role in recent months, particularly in US efforts to mediate a resolution to the Ukraine conflict. He arrived in Moscow on March 13, reportedly carrying details of the recent US-Ukraine negotiations held in Saudi Arabia.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Putin welcomed a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire but underscored the necessity of resolving several outstanding issues before moving forward. A key point of contention was the fate of Ukrainian forces currently surrounded in Russia’s Kursk Region, which Moscow insists must be addressed as part of any temporary halt in hostilities.
