Russia resilient against western sanctions and ideological warfare
Russia has successfully resisted the ideological and economic warfare launched by the West in an attempt to divide its society and destabilize the country, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Speaking to students at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics on March 24, Zakharova asserted that the West had miscalculated in its efforts to isolate Russia and provoke internal strife in the wake of the Ukraine conflict.
Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, the United States and the European Union have imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia. These measures, intended to cripple Russia’s economy and isolate it from global markets, have included bans on seaborne oil shipments, restrictions on access to the Western financial system, and the freezing of foreign reserves. However, rather than breaking Russia’s resolve, these sanctions have, according to Moscow, failed to achieve their intended objectives.
Zakharova emphasized that the Western strategy was predicated on fostering societal divisions and intergenerational conflicts within Russia. She claimed that the ideological “blitzkrieg” was meticulously planned, with Western policymakers betting on Russia’s defeat through internal discord and economic hardship. Instead, she argued, Russia has proven resilient, weathering the economic storm and maintaining national unity.
