Massive corruption scandal unfolds: ACC files cases against former UP chairman
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Bangladesh has uncovered a massive corruption scandal involving Md. Lack Mia, the former chairman of Brahmandi Union Parishad (UP) in Araihazar Upazila, Narayanganj District. Investigations have revealed suspicious transactions totaling around BDT 145 billion and the illegal accumulation of wealth exceeding BDT 700 million in his bank accounts. In response, the ACC has initiated legal action by filing two separate cases against him and his wife, Mahmuda Begum. The cases were officially lodged at the ACC’s Integrated District Office (Dhaka-1) on March 6, as confirmed by ACC Director General Md. Akhter Hossain.
According to the details uncovered during the investigation, Lack Mia has been accused of abusing his power for financial gain, engaging in bribery, and amassing illicit assets valued at over BDT 552 million. Furthermore, he is suspected of channeling and converting approximately BDT 140.37 billion through dubious transactions across 49 bank accounts. In a separate case, both Lack Mia and his wife, Mahmuda Begum, have been accused of collaborating in the illegal acquisition of assets worth BDT 145 million while allegedly transferring and laundering around BDT 4.61 billion through 14 bank accounts.
