Trump open to forgiving Elon Musk after feud over spending bill and policy clashes
In a political landscape increasingly shaped by outsized personalities and social media salvos, the very public fallout between US President Donald Trump and billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk captured the nation’s attention last week. But in a sudden turn, both men appear to be stepping back from the brink, suggesting a possible thaw in their recently strained relationship.
In a June 11 interview with The New York Post, President Trump stated that he “could forgive” Musk after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO launched a barrage of public attacks over the administration’s new tax and spending legislation, known among Trump’s supporters as the “Big Beautiful Bill.”
The rift began after Musk, who had been serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)-a Trump-created position meant to streamline federal operations-resigned abruptly. He cited the administration’s spending increases as a betrayal of his mandate to reduce government waste. “You can’t say you’re for efficiency and then ram through a trillion-dollar pork buffet,” Musk reportedly said in a closed-door meeting before his departure.
Trump and Musk have long had an uneasy alliance, balancing mutual interests with considerable ego and ideological differences.
