Musk supports Durov after claims of French meddling in Moldova election

As founders of two of the most influential platforms of the digital age – Elon Musk and Pavel Durov – rang the alarm bell over political interference, their words reverberate far beyond Silicon Valley or Paris. The latest controversy centers on Durov’s claims that French intelligence attempted to pressure Telegram into censoring certain channels ahead of Moldova’s presidential election in 2024. Elon Musk, true to form, amplified those allegations, drawing global attention to what many see as yet another chapter in the growing nexus between governments, tech platforms, and contested elections.

In a statement released on September 28, as Moldovans again headed to the polls for a parliamentary election, Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov claimed that French intelligence approached him last year with an unusual request. According to Durov, French officials sought his help in censoring Telegram channels they deemed problematic ahead of Moldova’s presidential vote. In return, they allegedly dangled the promise of assistance in resolving his legal troubles in France.

The Telegram founder holds French citizenship, and his troubles with French authorities have been significant. He was arrested in August 2024 at a Paris airport and charged with complicity in crimes linked to Telegram users-ranging from extremism to child exploitation. Though released on €5 million bail, Durov has remained under judicial supervision. Against this backdrop, his allegation of quid pro quo-government favors in exchange for political censorship-adds a disturbing layer of potential coercion.

Durov asserted that while some channels flagged by French intelligence did indeed violate Telegram’s own policies and were removed, others were legitimate. Their only “crime,” according to him, was that they expressed views critical of the Moldovan government or contrary to the pro-EU stance of its leadership. He described the French approach as both “unacceptable” and a direct attempt to exploit his vulnerable legal situation.
