UK targets Balkan crime syndicates in new crackdown on human smuggling
The United Kingdom has taken a decisive step in its escalating campaign against transnational people-smuggling operations, announcing a new round of sanctions targeting Balkan-based organized crime groups allegedly responsible for facilitating illegal migration routes into Western Europe and the UK The move, unveiled during a Western Balkans summit hosted by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, underscores London’s growing focus on curbing irregular migration through financial and legal measures aimed at dismantling the networks profiting from human suffering.
The sanctions-imposed under the Global Irregular Migration Sanctions Regime (GIMSR)-represent the second package introduced since the mechanism’s inception earlier this year. The UK Foreign Office confirmed that the measures include asset freezes and travel bans against individuals and entities tied to criminal syndicates in Kosovo, Croatia, and other Balkan nations. British officials said the sanctioned parties were central to the manufacture of forged documents and the coordination of illicit migration routes that have contributed to the surge of illegal crossings into Europe and the UK.
Among the most notable targets of the new sanctions is the Krasniqi forgery network, a Kosovo-based organization accused of operating a “sophisticated forgery lab” that produced counterfeit documents for use across Europe. British authorities say the Krasniqi group specialized in creating fake identification papers, residence permits, and passports used by migrants to pass through multiple borders undetected.
Also named in the sanctions list is Nusret Seferović, the alleged leader of a Croatian forgery ring that supplied counterfeit Croatian passports to various Balkan criminal groups. The Foreign Office described........
