Trump launches sweeping purge of National Security Council in bid to ‘gut the deep state’

In a stunning move that underscores President Donald Trump’s determination to remake the US national security apparatus during his second term, the White House has launched a sweeping overhaul of the National Security Council (NSC), abruptly firing more than 100 staffers across various regional and functional directorates. According to administration sources and multiple media reports, the reorganization is aimed at slashing bureaucratic influence and centralizing foreign policy decision-making – a maneuver Trump allies are calling an aggressive push to “gut the Deep State.”

The reorganization, which took place on May 23, reportedly blindsided career officials and political appointees alike. Employees across several NSC divisions – including those focused on critical regions such as the Indo-Pacific, Ukraine, Iran, and Africa – received emails informing them they had just 30 minutes to vacate their offices. The timing, just ahead of Memorial Day weekend, added to the suddenness and severity of the move.

One administration official speaking to Axios framed the restructuring as a necessary and long-overdue reset. “The NSC is the ultimate Deep State,” the official said. “It’s Marco vs. the Deep State. We’re gutting the Deep State.”
