Trump and Putin to discuss US-Russia relations soon
Preparations for a call between US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are reportedly in motion, with discussions anticipated to take place in the “coming days and weeks,” according to incoming US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz. Speaking to ABC News on January 12, Waltz revealed that efforts are underway to establish a framework for the conversation, which could potentially set the stage for further negotiations and an eventual in-person meeting between the two leaders.
The anticipated phone conversation marks a pivotal moment as the Trump administration prepares to assume office on January 20. A dialogue between Trump and Putin could serve as a starting point for recalibrating the strained US-Russia relationship, which has been marred by geopolitical tensions, accusations of election interference, and conflicting interests in regions like Syria and Ukraine.
According to Waltz, while no definitive timeline has been set for the call, it is expected to act as a “step” toward broader diplomatic engagement. “We have not set an exact framework for it, yet we’re working on that. But I do expect a call at least in the coming days and weeks. That will be a step, and we’ll take it from there,” Waltz said.
The Kremlin has expressed its willingness to engage with the incoming US administration, emphasizing its readiness to work toward improving bilateral ties. However, Moscow has also cautioned against setting premature expectations, noting that concrete details regarding a potential meeting remain unsettled. Kremlin spokesperson........
