Rubio calls for immediate negotiated end to Ukraine conflict

The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has declared that the ongoing Ukraine conflict must be resolved swiftly through negotiations, acknowledging the grim reality that the war is devastating Ukraine and cannot be won on the battlefield. Speaking in an interview on The Megyn Kelly Show on January 30, Rubio underscored former President Donald Trump’s position that the war must end immediately, stressing that any peace agreement would require both sides to make concessions.

Rubio’s comments mark a significant shift in Washington’s rhetoric regarding Ukraine. Under the previous administration of President Joe Biden, the US had committed to supporting Ukraine for “as long as it takes.” However, growing fatigue in Congress and the realization that the war has become a costly and protracted stalemate have led even some Democrats to reconsider the strategy. Rubio explicitly stated that Washington had been dishonest in suggesting that Ukraine could decisively defeat Russia and reclaim all of its pre-2014 territory, an objective that now appears increasingly unrealistic.

“What the dishonesty that has existed is that we somehow led people to believe that Ukraine would be able not just to defeat Russia, but, you know, destroy them, push them all the way back to what the world looked like in… 2014,” Rubio admitted.

His comments reflect a broader acknowledgment that Ukraine is struggling under the weight of Russia’s military superiority and sustained attacks on its infrastructure.

Rubio painted a bleak picture of Ukraine’s current state, warning that the country is being set back by a century due to the destruction of its energy grid, infrastructure, and economy.
