Tech billionaire Elon Musk has sparked widespread controversy after addressing an Alternative for Germany (AfD) campaign rally, urging Germans to move beyond “past guilt” and embrace national pride. Speaking via video link to a crowd of approximately 4,500 supporters in Halle on January 25, Musk’s remarks have added fuel to ongoing debates about Germany’s far-right political resurgence and the global influence of populist movements.

In his address, Musk encouraged Germans to reject the lingering shame associated with their nation’s Nazi past, suggesting it was time to prioritize “German culture” and “German values.” “Children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great-grandparents,” Musk said. His comments were clearly aimed at countering the post-World War II narrative that has led to Germany’s significant efforts in confronting its history and maintaining a cautious stance on nationalism.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s statements aligned closely with the AfD’s platform, which has frequently questioned the necessity of Germany’s self-reflection on its wartime actions. Musk also decried multiculturalism, echoing AfD sentiments that portray immigration and diversity as threats to national identity.

The AfD’s campaign rally marked the official start of its push for the upcoming February 23 elections. Party leader Alice Weidel took to the stage after Musk’s address, outlining a platform centered on anti-immigration policies and opposition to Berlin’s support for Ukraine.
