Musk clashes with Trump over tax bill and Epstein allegation

In a stunning escalation of tensions between two of America’s most powerful and controversial figures, Elon Musk and President Donald Trump are now embroiled in an open and increasingly personal war of words over federal spending, tax policy, and even long-buried scandals linked to Jeffrey Epstein.

What began as a policy disagreement over Trump’s signature tax and spending legislation-the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill”-has erupted into a bitter public feud, with Musk stepping down from his government role and accusing Trump of ingratitude, deception, and even implication in the still-classified Epstein files.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of the social media platform X, stunned Washington when he abruptly resigned from his position as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump-era agency created in his second term to slash wasteful federal spending.

Musk had served in the role since early 2024 and was widely credited with driving over $175 billion in savings through agency mergers, workforce reductions, and infrastructure modernization. But on June 4, Musk said he could no longer support Trump’s legislative agenda, citing irreconcilable concerns over the ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ a sweeping tax and spending package passed by the House in May and now awaiting Senate approval.

In his resignation statement, Musk lambasted the bill for ballooning the national debt and “undoing the core mission” of DOGE. He later described it as a “catastrophic mistake” that would saddle future generations with what he termed “debt slavery.”
