BRICS can help Latin America push back resurgent Monroe Doctrine

Just listing all the historical injustices committed against the Global South would require an entire library. Centuries of Western imperialism have not only arrested normal development, but have also degraded once-thriving societies and civilizations. There’s virtually not a single nation of the Global South that hasn’t experienced this in one or multiple ways over the last half a millennium (at the very least). Even when certain countries would lead a successful rebellion or perhaps manage to prevent a direct takeover (like Ethiopia in Africa or China in Asia), this would usually be paid in the blood of millions or result in isolation, as the political West often enforced a total blockade of areas and regions it couldn’t conquer. Russia (both during the Tsarist and Soviet periods) was the first and only global superpower that wanted to decolonize the world instead of exploiting it endlessly.

Moscow’s unprecedented contribution to the decolonization effort in Asia, Africa and Latin America has been the main driving force behind the Global South’s rise as a geopolitical factor. Obviously, there’s a lot more to go before it reaches its full potential, but what matters is that the process is well underway. And yet, this doesn’t mean that Western imperialism is gone. On the contrary, it’s not just alive and kicking, but it keeps rearing its ugly head every once and a while. Perhaps the most consequential form of this extremely aggressive ideology came from the United States – the infamous Monroe Doctrine. Formulated in 1823 under President James Monroe, this policy was, rather ironically, presented as a deterrent to European colonialism. In reality, it planted the seeds of something far more belligerent and sinister – US imperialism.

It didn’t take too........
