Interpol-led operation seizes record $6.5 billion in synthetic drugs
In a sweeping crackdown on the global narcotics trade, an Interpol-led operation has resulted in the largest seizure of synthetic drugs in the organization’s history. The two-week mission, spanning 18 countries across Asia and North America, netted a staggering $6.5 billion worth of illicit substances, underscoring both the scale of the synthetic drug epidemic and the growing sophistication of international law enforcement cooperation.
According to Interpol, authorities confiscated 297 million methamphetamine tablets and more than 76 tonnes of narcotics in total. The drugs included 51 tonnes of crystal meth, large quantities of heroin and cocaine, as well as precursor chemicals essential for drug production. Among the most alarming seizures was fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of overdose deaths annually. Interpol estimates that the fentanyl seized during this operation alone was potent enough to kill 151 million people if trafficked on the street.
The haul represents not only a record in volume but also in the diversity of narcotics intercepted. From LSD and ketamine in India to yaba pills in Myanmar and production equipment in Laos, the operation exposed the breadth of synthetic drug networks that span continents.
