India seeks UN terrorist designation for Kashmir attack perpetrators amid ceasefire

In the aftermath of a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in April, India has intensified its diplomatic efforts to have The Resistance Front (TRF) designated as a terrorist organization under the United Nations sanctions regime. The move comes amid renewed tensions with Pakistan, which escalated into military confrontation last week and ended in a shaky ceasefire agreement. As New Delhi seeks international support for a tougher stance on cross-border terrorism, questions linger over the long-term viability of peace and the broader geopolitical implications.

According to reports from the Indian Express, a high-level Indian delegation has been dispatched to New York with the specific aim of engaging with the Monitoring Team of the UN Security Council’s 1267 Sanctions Committee. This committee oversees the listing and monitoring of individuals and entities associated with global terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS.

The Indian team is also meeting officials from the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) to garner wider institutional support. These diplomatic engagements are aimed at officially recognizing TRF-a suspected proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)-as a global terrorist group.

India argues that the group’s public claim of responsibility for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists, constitutes sufficient grounds for designation. While TRF later distanced itself from the operation, Indian intelligence agencies have presented communication intercepts and social media activity as evidence of the group’s ties to Pakistan and LeT.
