In an era where technology is reshaping nearly every aspect of society, the judicial system in the United States is no exception. A recent study from Northwestern University reveals that more than half of federal judges in the United States are now using artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their work, a trend that carries both promise and peril for the legal profession. This research sheds light on how AI is slowly becoming a fixture in courtrooms and judicial chambers, raising questions about reliability, ethics, and the future of judicial decision-making.

The study, which surveyed 112 federal judges from a random sample of 502 officials across bankruptcy, magistrate, district, and appellate courts, found that 60 percent of respondents reported using at least one AI tool in their judicial work. AI is being employed for a variety of tasks, including reviewing legal documents, conducting research, and drafting or editing rulings. While some judges have embraced AI cautiously, others remain skeptical, citing concerns over accuracy and potential misuse.

Legal research emerged as the most common use of AI, with 30 percent of judges employing tools to assist in reviewing cases, precedents, and statutes. Reviewing documents followed at 16 percent, and drafting or editing judicial opinions and orders is increasingly common. Around 22 percent of judges report using AI daily or weekly, demonstrating that for a subset of the judiciary, AI is becoming an integral part of their workflow. In contrast, approximately one in three judges said they encourage or allow AI use in their chambers, while 20 percent maintain formal prohibitions. Surprisingly, more than 45 percent of judges reported that they have not received any formal training from court administration on AI, highlighting a gap between usage and official oversight.
