Mario Canseco: Polling shows generational rift over grandparents' role in child care

Discussions about establishing a child-care program that is affordable and accessible are not new to Canadians. Families in Quebec have benefitted from a system that has successfully fulfilled these requirements for more than two decades.

In 2021, the federal government expressed its support for taking the concept of “$10aDay Child Care” everywhere. This past March, just weeks before the last federal election, agreements were reached between the federal government and 11 of 13 provinces and territories, including British Columbia.

The uniform implementation of the program has been challenging, partly due to decisions taken by provincial governments. In British Columbia, the federal government has vowed to provide $5.38 billion to fund the “$10aDay Child Care” program from 2026 to 2031. The funds are expected to result in fee reductions for families, more licensed child-care spaces, and wage enhancements for early childhood educators.
