Gary Newbon: Latchford's Blues brothers starred at front and back

The Latchford brothers – Dave and Bob – were starring at the front and back of the Birmingham City football team when I arrived at the city as the new television sports presenter in December 1971.

Birmingham were on their way back to the old top tier with Dave Latchford in goal saving them and his younger brother Bob up front knocking in lots of goals.

That was some team with one of my favourite managers, the late Freddie Goodwin, a class act as a person who I had seen play for Manchester United right after the tragic Munich air crash in the 50s.

Between Dave and Bob were fine players like Bob Hatton and Trevor Francis either side of Bob and the likes of Garry Pendrey and Malcolm Page at full back and Alan Campbell in mid-field.

Bob looked like a class striker in looks, approach and goalscoring ability. I can still see the image of him stylishly leaping in the air to head in yet another goal.

Dave was a chunky figure with a safe pair of hands.

Trevor was, of course, to become Britain’s first million-pound footballer when he signed for Nottingham Forest but before that Bob Latchford was to break the British transfer record of £350,000 when joining Everton........
