OPINION | CRAIG DOUGLASS: Our next leader
Donald J. Trump is term-limited. At least the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution states as much. His time in the White House should come to an end at noon on Jan. 20, 2029. For the sake of argument, let's take it as given that he will not try to run for a third term, nor otherwise serve in one.
So, the 2028 election for president should be a clean slate open to those who have not served as president, nor run for the office. As far as the two major-party nominations are concerned, the sitting Republican vice president may run, and the previous Democratic Party nominee may run as well. We'll see.
The country has only one president at a time. What should be considered now is where do we go from here. I suggest this future-casting exercise based on the mercurial nature of the current administration. From my point of view, what's next or what should be next is steady leadership offered by a sitting or previous state governor.
