EDITORIAL: ICE house brewing?

The paper reported last week that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is considering using the Franklin County prison site for an immigration detention facility.

Question: We thought Arkansans were told the state needed more prison beds. For its own inmates/purposes.

Reporter Penny Weaver wrote that a trio of agents were visiting the 815-acre site last week when the chief deputy of Franklin County, one Jon Little, stumbled upon them while on patrol. (What luck!) Apparently one of the agents told the deputy while at the proposed prison spot: "We can have this up quick."

Probably can. But we thought Arkansas needed the jail space.

A spokesman for the governor said late last week that the governor supports President Trump's policies and efforts regarding illegal immigration: "Governor Sanders' administration is in ongoing conversations with the Trump administration and federal immigration officials on how best to support the president's work to secure the border and get violent, criminal illegal aliens off our streets," the governor's communications director........
