Words are powerful. The ones women use for their own genitals—in private, with partners, in their own heads—have a measurable effect on how much pleasure they actually experience. And someone finally studied it.

Researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University and Bar-Ilan University surveyed 457 American women about the words they use to describe their genitals, both in everyday life and during sex, publishing their findings in the journal Sex Roles. They sorted responses into nine categories—anatomical, vulgar, playful or childish, euphemisms, gender identity-related, clitoris-focused, edible, nature-based, and receptacle—then........
