VICTORIA — The New Democrats are facing renewed calls to improve safety in B.C. hospitals, three years after they launched a “new relational security model to create a safer environment for staff and patients.”

The government announced the hiring of 320 “relational security officers” in 2022 in response to increased violence and injury claims in hospitals.

“These actions will help ensure all health-care employees have safe and healthy workplaces, and that the patients who count on them are accessing care in a safe environment,” said then health minister Adrian Dix.

The new model was already underway in seven acute care hospitals and two mental health facilities. The new hires would staff another 26 acute care facilities.
