Vancouver council has approved a plan to revitalize the downtown Granville strip, the city’s historic entertainment district which has in recent years become the focus of complaints about street disorder, disrepair and crime.

The plan, which aims to make the street a “safer, welcoming and vibrant destination,” was approved unanimously by council on Wednesday, and praised by several local entertainment, tourism, and business leaders.

But some observers are raising concerns about what the plan could mean for the significant number of single-room occupancy housing stock in the neighbourhood.
