Editorial: The prospect of war with Iran

Editor's note: The editorial below, which appears in the Sunday print edition, was written before the U.S. bombardment of nuclear sites in Iran began.

President Donald J. Trump did the right thing on Thursday when the White House hit the pause button on what to that point had appeared to be a headlong rush toward direct U.S. participation in Israel’s air war against Iran. The decision, the administration announced, would be made in the next two weeks.

If Mr. Trump’s delay isn’t just one of his trademark “two weeks” stalls for time, it gives the president 14 days to work with U.S. military leaders to formulate an actual war plan with a cogent strategy and realistic goals, as opposed to indiscriminate bombing and an open-ended conflict.
