Editorial: School meals should be free — and nutritious

Gov. Kathy Hochul is proposing that breakfast and lunch should be made available at no cost to all students in New York, regardless of family income. That's a great move.
Most students in the state already have access to free school meals, including students in New York City, where free lunch and breakfast are provided to all students. The governor's office estimates that her plan would extend free meals to another 300,000 students, which is no small thing.

The move, if approved by the Legislature, would make New York the ninth state to enact a universal free lunch program, and it would restore a program that was in place nationally during the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, Ms. Hochul has also proposed an increase to the state's child tax credit for low-income........
