Editorial: Ms. Hochul's nuclear embrace is a powerful step

New York needs more electricity, and it needs a far greater portion of that power to come from sources that contribute as little as possible to global warming.

Enter Gov. Kathy Hochul, who recently directed the New York Power Authority to build a nuclear plant at a yet-to-be-determined upstate site. The facility, she said, will be capable of producing at least one gigawatt of electricity, enough to power a million homes.

The governor's move is politically courageous, given that nuclear power still provokes opposition among many in the environmental community. But Ms. Hochul is doing the right thing for the future of New York's economy and the planet.
