U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York John A. Sarcone III at a news conference in April.

Almost two weeks ago, John A. Sarcone III called WNYT NewsChannel 13 with a scoop: The then-interim U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York said he had been told that a panel of federal judges within the sprawling 32-county district had voted to extend his tenure as its top federal prosecutor as the 120-day limit of his appointment by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi approached.

A few hours later, a no doubt aggravated Board of Judges was obliged to release a terse statement noting that it had, in fact, taken no action regarding Mr. Sarcone, who had apparently decided to spread the word without alerting the Northern District's media office. Three days later, the judicial panel put out another brief release stating that it had declined to exercise its power to name a new U.S. attorney for the district.
