Commentary: New York's voting reforms are working

If you voted in New York in 2018, you may have stood in a long line. Maybe you even experienced broken scanners at your poll site. You also couldn’t plan ahead: There was no early voting or vote by mail.

Thousands of New Yorkers every election had to choose between voting or getting to work on time. Thankfully, that’s not the case anymore.

For nearly a decade, advocates fought for reforms that make our democracy more accessible, transparent and responsive to the people it’s meant to serve. As leading organizations behind these reforms, Common Cause New York and the Center for Law and Social Justice were proud to see voters take advantage of a stronger, more accessible system.

In June’s New York City primaries, over one million New Yorkers voted under a transformed system that makes it easier than ever to participate in our democracy. With ranked-choice voting, expanded early voting and more time for voters to register, New York City is showing how to expand ballot access at a time when millions of Americans are disconnected from the political process.

The most obvious change has been ranked-choice voting, which NYC voters first........
